Kokin Waka Shu was published in the Heian period (798-1185)
Emperor Daigo ordered 4 poets to make a “Collection of Japanese Poems”
In 905 (other theory shows it was 912), 1111 poems were published.
These translations are very basic. Each piece has a very deep poetic meaning that is difficult to translate to English. If you would like know more about a specific one, please ask.
Fan Shape [Large Horizontal]
1[ひぐらししのなく山里のゆふくれは風よりほかにとふ人もなし]詠み人知らず
In the woodland close to the village only the evening cicada's sound and wind visit the area
2[秋の野の草の袂か花すすき穂に出でて招く袖と見ゆらむ]素性法師
Susuki grass looks like a sleeve in the autumn inviting me
3[女郎花吹き過ぎてくる秋風は目には見えねど香こそしるけれ]みつね
The wind blows the aroma of the yellow partinia flower, signalling the start of autumn
4[木の間よりもりくる月の影見れば心尽くしの秋は来にけり]詠み人知らず
The moonlight filtering through the branches symbolizes the loneliness of the autumn
5[おく山に紅葉ふみわけなく鹿のこゑきく時ぞ秋はかなしき]詠み人知らず
